Oneida City Fire Department Raises Funds for local Breast Cancer Charity
November 2015
The Oneida City Fire Department partnered with Hope Chest for Charity Inc. to create the CNY Breast Cancer Community Resource Guide. This comprehensive guide features local organizations, events, products, books, and blogs, all presented in a magazine-style format. It serves as a valuable resource for those newly diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as survivors and supporters looking to engage with the breast cancer community.
Created by Hope Chest for Charity President Shelly Straub, the guide aims to provide a clear starting point for anyone seeking to take an active role in the fight against breast cancer. “After completing my treatment for invasive breast cancer, I felt it was important to get involved in the CNY community that supports the pink ribbon. However, I struggled to find information about local walks, runs, and events. That’s when I began compiling all the local non-profits, events, and support groups into an easy flip-through guide,” said Straub.
The Oneida City Fire Department has been selling pink breast cancer awareness T-shirts for $20 to raise money for the cause since October. Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Fields shared that all firefighters at the Oneida Station have purchased and worn the pink shirts during their shifts to support the initiative.
The Oneida Fireman’s Benevolent Association wanted to contribute to the fight against breast cancer but faced challenges in finding charitable organizations to collaborate with. Their partnership with Hope Chest for Charity Inc. now ensures that the funds raised are put to good use, supporting those affected by breast cancer in the CNY community.
